Once you get your dentures, it opens a whole new world for you. Before, you were afraid to smile and afraid to eat some of your favorite foods. Now that you have your dentures, you will find that your confidence starts to increase. However, you must realize it will take some time to get used to the dentures. You also need to know how to take care of them. The following are some dentures aftercare tips that can help to make things easier for you as you are adjusting. Eventually, it will become like second nature.
Adjusting to the Dentures
Make sure you leave the dentures in for the first 24 hours. It will feel strange at first, and as if you have “too much” in your mouth. You may also notice an increase in salivation. The salivation and the strange feeling will go away once you get used to the dentures. During the initial adjustment period, you may also find some sore spots in the mouth. If you do, come into our office so the dentures can be adjusted.
Do not leave the dentures in overnight. Some of the small partials and lower dentures could be swallowed, which is the last thing you need. It will also allow the soft tissue to have a break.
Make sure you clean your dentures each day. You can do this with a soft toothbrush. You should also clean your gums. You can clean the dentures with regular toothpaste or with denture cream if you prefer. If you have issues with them, bring them into the office.
